/ October 20, 2012I enjoyed a wonderful trip to NYC to visit the “I” in June with my family, son, daughter’s and grandchildren. Had the VIP tour. Some of the comments from my family were, how could you all sleep in such close quarters–the ceilings are sure low and the stairs (ladders) are to steep and yes I did bang my head many times going through hatches.The tour guide was great even though he never served on the “I”. I served aboard the “I” after serving on the Tarawa (pushing planes on the flight deck) from Oct 52 to Aug 53. I receved orders to Airman school in Norman, OK then was sent to AO school in Jax,FL but after four weeks I decided I did not want to be an AO so I requested transfer back to the fleet. I was sent to NOB Norfolk for training (again) in fire fighting & damage control, than was assigned to an APL in Oct 53 with about 50 other precomissioning crew. My precomissioning assignment started out in the deep sink on the APL until a chief came in one day and wanted to know if anyone could type. Any thing was better then the deep sink. I was assigned to the Supply dept. typing up requests for aviation spares. After doing this for a few months I was promoted to AK3. Never saw it coming but was pleased that my hard work was rewarded (without an exam). Remainded in the S1A division until my transfer to NAAS Chincoteague, Va in Feb of 56. Other duty stations included FASRON 106; Argentia NFLD; VC-6 NAS Norfolk; NAS Cecil Field, Fla; NSD Argentia and NFLD Philadelphia Recruting District, Phila. Retired in ’71 as an AK1/RIC on recruiting duty in Dover Del.
